How to Install Ukrainian Fonts on Your PC

Windows Operating Systems

On your computer, go to START then CONTROL PANEL then REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS.  This will bring up a three tabbed folder.   Click on the ADVANCED tab.  There will be a header "Languages for non-unicode programs"; under that is a drop-down box with language options.  Select Ukrainian.  (It's near the bottom of the list.)  I don't think you need to worry about the "code page conversion tables" below that, but if you want to click the boxes for the Ukrainian ones you can.  It's a little tedious.)  Then click APPLY.   Don't click OKAY.

Go to the second tab under  REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS, which is LANGUAGES.  Under "Installed services" click on "Add..".  This will bring up a drop-down menu that offers options to add languages.  Add Ukrainian to this list.   Under "Preferences" just below that, click "Language bar".  Show the language bar on the desktop.  Now click "APPLY" for everything and OK to close the windows that you have opened in reverse order.  You will now have non-phonetic Ukrainian on your computer.

For phonetic Ukrainian font, now go to http://www.brama.com/compute/win95nt.html .

This is Brama Computing and Software - Software -Windows 95/NT

Click on Keyboard Utilities - Ukrainian Keyboard driver for Windows NT/95 (I know, we all have XP or newer but this still works).  When you click on this link, it will bring up a box asking you if you want to open or save to your computer (or cancel).  Save this file, KbdUkrNT4.zip to your computer-- I recommend Desktop (so you can find it).  Then open this folder and on the left side will be a command to "Extract all files."  Click on this to extract the files.  They will extract to your desktop.  When this is finished you will have a blue and gold icon on your desktop which says "Shortcut to UkrKbd."

Click on this to bring up the details.  Encoding is CP1251 , Toggle keys are your choice, but I use Scroll Lock.  Also, use a phonetic layout.  Click okay.  You're done!  Whenever you want to type Ukrainian, click on the language bar at the bottom of the desktop to change languages.

The best way to find weird keys it to type the keyboard, but here are a few: the Q is "я", W is ш, J is "й".  All of the keys are there.  For the number keys, the numbers are the same but the symbols are not.  Play around with it to find what you need.   Also, if in Word and you can't find a  symbol you need, go to Insert then Symbol and it will bring up what you need.  The exclamation point has to be entered that way, for example.

When you are ready to use Ukrainian font (I  am assuming you haven't used this before, but if you have, ignore this from here down) open Word.  Click on the language bar at the bottom of your screen and choose Ukrainian.  Go to "Shortcut to UkrKbd" and click OKAY.  Press the Scroll lock or whatever toggle key you have chosen to activate the keyboard driver, and you should be able to type Ukrainian phonetically.

NOTE: It appears that these instructions will work for Windows 7.

Windows Vista Operating System

This requires a different program; the Brama phonetic keyboard driver does not work.  Because the program is an executable file, many e-mail programs will block the download (and in GMail's case, the upload).  E-mail the webmaster.  It is a very easy fix, but requires a unique download.

MAC or any Apple Computer

You are so on your own.......sorry.
